AI literacy, training and governance
Your team is already using AI. Has anyone taught them how?
Nearly half of employees admit using AI in ways that break company policy, including uploading sensitive company data to free public tools. Most have had no training. We fix both: a team that uses AI skilfully, and a business that stays in control of its data.

Four risks, and most businesses are carrying at least two
None of these come from bad intent. They come from a gap: people were handed a powerful tool, or found one themselves, and nobody showed them where the edges are.
1. An untrained team using AI anyway
Two thirds of employees rely on AI output without checking it, and more than half say AI has caused mistakes in their work. Confident, fluent and wrong is what untrained use looks like. It reaches your clients before it reaches you.
2. Personal AI, and your data leaking with it
Staff paste client details, quotes, contracts and pricing into free chatbots on personal accounts. On a consumer tier, that data can be retained and used to improve a model you do not control. You will not see it happen. There is no log.
3. No AI in the business at all
54% of UK SMEs now use AI, up from 25% a year earlier. UK SMEs that implement it report productivity gains of 27% or more. Standing still is now a decision with a cost, and it compounds every quarter.
4. Innovation stifled, quietly
Without training or permission, people hide their AI use and present its work as their own. The good ideas stay in one person's browser tab. Nothing is shared, nothing is standardised, and the business learns nothing.
A ban does not remove the risk. It removes your visibility of it.
What the research says
Named sources, 2025 and 2026. Nothing from a vendor deck.
In the EU, Article 4 of the AI Act has required employers to ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among staff since February 2025, with national enforcement from August 2026. It reaches UK firms whose AI use affects people in the EU. Documented training is now the baseline, not the ambition.
The two traps we see most often
Where a business sits on AI is rarely "using it" or "not using it". It is usually one of these.
Scattered individual use
Five people, five tools, five ways of working. Lots of activity, little business impact, and all the data risk. Nobody can say what AI is doing for the firm because nobody is looking at it as a firm.
A tool bought, then abandoned
A licence was purchased, a login was issued, and usage fell off within a month. Not because the tool was wrong, but because nobody was trained on what to use it for, or given permission to change how they work.
Both have the same fix. Clarity on what AI is for in your business, then training and rules that match it.
How we help
Four ways in. Most businesses need two of them. We tell you which after a short look at how your team uses AI today.
Train your team on the tool you already bought
Copilot, ChatGPT Team, Claude, Gemini or something sector-specific. Role-based training on the jobs that tool is good at in your business, and the jobs it is not. Usage goes up because usefulness goes up.
Help you choose the right tool
If you have not bought yet, or you are not sure the one you have fits. We start from your processes and your data, not from a vendor comparison, and give you a plain recommendation in writing.
Teach the landscape, and skilful, safe use
What generative AI is and is not good at. How to get reliable output, how to check it, what must never be pasted in, and how to spot confident nonsense. Practical sessions, built on your team's real tasks.
Governance for your administrators
For whoever runs the tool: settings that stop data leaving, access and retention rules, a one-page acceptable-use policy, and a simple record of who was trained on what. Enough to satisfy a client audit, a regulator or Article 4.
How an AI literacy engagement runs
Four weeks, fixed fee, fully remote. Sessions on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings so your working day is untouched.
See where your team really is
A short anonymous pulse check of how your people use AI today, and a review of the tools and settings already in the building. You get the honest picture, in writing.
Set the rules and the setup
The one-page policy for what AI may and may not touch. Administrator settings configured so data stays yours. Roles mapped to the tasks AI should take on.
Train, then measure
Role-based sessions built on your team's real work, not generic demos. Then a 30-day check on usage, output quality and the questions that came up, so the training sticks.
Your time
One named person, one hour a week, plus the training sessions themselves.
Any tool
Tool-agnostic. We train on what you have, or help you choose. We sell no licences.
Your cost
Fixed fee, written scope. Agreed before any work begins.
Your people
People stay. Work changes. 86% of SMEs using AI report no change to headcount (BCC and University of Essex, 2026).
What you walk away with
A trained team
People who know what to use AI for, how to check it, and what never goes in. Confident, not guessing.
A one-page rule
An acceptable-use policy your team will actually read, and a record of who was trained on what.
A governed tool
Settings, access and retention configured so client data stays yours. Documented for the next audit.
A clear next step
The two or three processes where AI, or automation, will return the most hours. Priced and scoped if you want them.
A message from the founder
Hello there, thanks for checking us out. My name is Isaac, and I am the founder of Shift Engine AI. I launched this business to serve established businesses that like the sound of AI but do not know where to start.
Our team brings a decade of experience working with organisations at every growth stage, first on intelligent process automation, and in the last few years on AI adoption alongside it.
Working with many business leaders, we have watched the same problem repeat. Leaders like the sound of AI, so they buy whichever tool jumps out at them, without a proper diagnosis of what the business needs. Just as often, they forget that intelligent automation matters as much as generative AI. AI can read emails, draft documents, send replies, even make calls. But it needs a solid workflow, configured intelligently, for a business process to run smoothly.
When the two are paired well, we have seen the same results again and again: better client retention, healthier margins, growth without extra headcount, and, dare we say it, happier employees.
So reach out directly. What is the number one challenge in your business right now? We are confident we can help you move in the right direction, with clear guidance on your processes and the right combination of intelligent automation and AI.
